Indiana's northeast lake country — Lake Wawasee, Lake Tippecanoe, Lake James and Maxinkuckee among more than a hundred natural glacial lakes — carries some of the state's highest shoreline-property values. Every new seawall or bulkhead on a public freshwater lake requires a written IDNR license under the Lake Preservation Act, and the permitted material depends on the lake's shoreline classification. We build to those standards while engineering for freeze-thaw movement and winter ice shove.
Public freshwater lakes are protected resources, and the Indiana Administrative Code dictates what may be built where. On developed shorelines we install durable steel and vinyl walls; on protected classes we deliver glacial-stone and bioengineered shoreline that satisfy the regulation while holding the bank.
Seawall cost on Indiana's glacial lakes is driven by the shoreline classification under the Lake Preservation Act and by access to the waterline. A public freshwater lake is generally one of five acres or more that existed before 1947 — a definition that covers Wawasee, Tippecanoe, Lake James and Maxinkuckee — and any work below the legal shoreline requires an IDNR license.
New seawalls and bulkheads on a public freshwater lake require a written license from the Indiana DNR under the Lake Preservation Act (IC 14-26-2). Under 312 IAC 11-4-2, developed shorelines may use steel, vinyl, riprap, concrete or glacial stone, while areas of special concern and significant wetland shorelines are limited to glacial stone or bioengineered methods. Shore Protect Construction handles the license process and builds to the correct shoreline class.
