Chicago retaining walls are a different problem from suburban yard walls. Lots are narrow, alleys carry sanitation trucks, sidewalks cover vault spaces, garages sit a foot below grade, and a century of urban fill hides everything from bricks to abandoned coal chutes. Shore Protect Construction designs walls that work inside those constraints — cast-in-place concrete and CMU walls for garages and driveways, engineered parkway retainers along the right-of-way, and vault-wall repair under sidewalks where the city's grade has shifted from the building's grade.
Urban walls live or die by the things a yard-wall contractor never thinks about: alley access, neighbor-side excavation easements, vault-space coordination with the city, and a backfill that is half historic fill, half new spec. Our urban projects are scoped to those constraints from day one.
Urban retaining wall cost in Chicago is driven by access — how far material has to be hand-carried from the alley, whether a small excavator can reach the back lot, and whether the city has tagged the parkway for protected trees. Any retaining wall touching the Chicago public way — parkway retainers, sidewalk vault walls, walls within the alley right-of-way — requires a permit through the Chicago Department of Buildings, and vault-space work also coordinates with the Department of Transportation (CDOT). Private-lot walls over 4 feet of exposed height require stamped engineered drawings. Inner-ring suburbs each run their own permit process; we work with all of them.
